Johannes Gutenberg's press. While it wasn't the first press, it was the first one to use movable types, which made printing a lot faster, easier and cheaper. Gutenberg's invention had profound consequences in mankind's history. It not only let knowledge spread faster and to more people, including those who couldn't afford to buy a book before, but also shattered the official religious view of the world that led to a lot of social, political and epistemological changes, like the birth of modern sciences, different literary expressions and new groups of power.
Printing with movable types is so important, that without it, none of the subsequent important inventions would've been possible. It's like the mother of inventions.

Of course, without the written word and many other factors, like the development of language or the invention of paper and ink, Gutenberg's press would have never existed. However, this invention alone led to one of the major (if not the major) booms in many fields, not only knowledge. It reshaped the world.
Edit: "major", not "mayor". Sorry. I think in Spanish.

Gutenberg's press was what I was going to answer. In the documentary " The Day the Universe Changed " the importance of the press and printed books ( in languages other than Latin! ) was very well explained - spread knowledge to those who had no access beforehand.

It's a pretty good answer. However, without the written word actually preceding it by thousands of years, the invention of the printing press would've ultimately been a pointless invention.

Good question and a controversial one too! In my opinion, the answer is different if you look at it from different angles. Here are some angles;

1. From the point of view of survival of mankind, the greatest inventions are of course "Fire" and "Agriculture".

2. From the point of view of technological development, the greatest inventions are "Wheel" & "Electricity".

3. From the point of view of intellectual development, the greatest inventions are "Writing/Scripts" & "Books".

4. From the point of view of social development, the greatest inventions is a "Ceremonial Marriage".

5. From the point of view of spiritual development, the greatest invention are "Place of Worship" & "Prayer". They may be in any form.

Hope that was up to your expectations.

Thanks & regards,

Owl

Language
I believe that the invention of complex systems of communication amoung groups of humans had to be the greatest of all inventions.
Without the invention and development of complex systems of communication (languages) as a basis to work with, would mankind been able to invent anything else?
Perhaps, but I know of no civilization which can be linked to various inventions prior to this time which did not first and foremost possess a form of language which had to be invented regardless how rudimentary those first languages had to of been.

I usually take languages as milestones in mankind's history. The problem with this is that complex systems of communication wouldn't be an invention but many inventions, developed little by little with many people`s contribution. It wouldn't be mankind's greatest invention (in singular).

Along the lines of the toothbrush and antibiotics, I would say that sanitation by using soap is the best invention that man ever created. Before sanitation, “doctors” would perform surgeries without anything but dirty bare hands. Nobody washed their hands to get rid of the dirt and germ particles (even soap that isn’t antimicrobial or antibacterial can remove germs). Think about it, the bubonic plague was started by the poor sanitation conditions. Diarrheal germs would get on a person’s hands and they would go all day shaking hands, eating and preparing food, and touching multiple surfaces. Then everything that they touched would be contaminated. Diarrhea still causes death in many countries without sanitation.

Because of soap, other sanitizing inventions, like hand sanitizer, autoclaves (which sterilize stainless steel tools), and things like Lysol products were invented. Sanitization is a massive industry, and it keeps most people of the world free from easily avoidable germs.

The best invention ever is and will always be simply toilet paper. Sure indoor plumbing and an actual flushing toilet is great...I thank God for not having to use pages of an old Sear's catalog or from a newspaper. Our society is truly blessed and owes the man or woman who created toilet paper on a convenient roll, a debt of gratitude. Can you imagine life without it?

I'm going with the ability to produce fire. We use it for cooking, keeping warm, keeping away predatory animals, killing off bacteria (both directly and by heating water to wash with), etc. Considering all of the legends from around the world talking about how fire was the thing that mankind discovered/was given that made such a huge difference in learning and advancement I'm really thinking that should at least be one of the top inventions.

The greatest invention to me is eyeglasses. I have needed them badly since I was 10 years old. I can't image having to live life without them. My vision is so bad, that if I didn't have glasses there are so many thing I wouldn't be able to do. I can't even see people's features on their faces without them.
--quote--
According to the Vision Council of America, approximately 75% of adults use some sort of vision correction

Now image life with 75% of adults having difficulty doing everyday tasks because of their vision.

Education should be put in the running.
I know that you need language and the written word to have it, but I don't think that this prerequisite automatically makes it superior to its product.

Human's strive for knowledge is what has driven the race forward in technology.

My idea of what is the greatest invention would be the table. Many countries have solved numerous problems at the table. Many families have come together to discuss and grow closer at the table. Business men make big business decisions at the table, life and death discussions occur at the table. The American Indians and the Pilgrims sat down to break bread at the table. Jesus and his apostles had the last supper at a table. War is declared, Peace is resolves, hearts are broken, love is lost, children are discussed, love is declared, friendships are forged, life is contemplated, lessons are learned and taught, dreams are realized, and God is praised, and all of these things happen at the table.

I would like to answer this question two different ways.

I think in past times you would have to look at literacy trade the invention of the wheel etc.

However if you look more recently, look no further than the invention of the internet. How amazing is being able to talk to people thousands of miles away, to be able to share information with billions of people and to be able to purchase pretty much anything you can think of and get it delivered a few days later. To have all the information you could possibly need available to anyone with an internet connection. As they say knowledge is power.

Yes you could argue that without the invention of computers / electricity / phone lines etc this would not be possible but I think pound for pound the wonder and vastness of the internet is the most amazing thing for me.

Thanks

The first thing that came to my mind was the toothbrush. This may sound a bit mundane, but think about it- they've discovered that the bacteria that is harbored in your mouth due to bad oral hygiene is the cause of many major heart problems, as well as other health issues. Heart problems lead to decreased lifespan. If people live shorter lives, they have less time to spare, and thus less time to devote to art, music, peace, great inventions, and other worthwhile activities.
And, I'm of the opinion that bad breath hinders democracy. ;*)

The written word in general. After all, how many thoughts, beliefs, traditions, etc. have been lost to the ages due to the fact that when passed down orally something gets lost in the translation? Countless things have been lost due to the fact that before the written word, there was no documentation of the events, rites, beliefs, thoughts, stories, etc other than that of word of mouth.

On the other hand, the written word seems to confuse people into thinking it is more valid. Just because something is written down doesn't mean you should believe it, just as you can't believe just anything you see on the web.

Countless things have been lost DESPITE the fact they were written. Think of the Library of Alexandria, where many manuscripts were lost for ever, or countless books that become dust without anyone ever reprinting them because publishing houses simply have nothing to earn.
