Printing with movable types is so important, that without it, none of the subsequent important inventions would've been possible. It's like the mother of inventions.

M$1. From the point of view of survival of mankind, the greatest inventions are of course "Fire" and "Agriculture".
2. From the point of view of technological development, the greatest inventions are "Wheel" & "Electricity".
3. From the point of view of intellectual development, the greatest inventions are "Writing/Scripts" & "Books".
4. From the point of view of social development, the greatest inventions is a "Ceremonial Marriage".
5. From the point of view of spiritual development, the greatest invention are "Place of Worship" & "Prayer". They may be in any form.
Hope that was up to your expectations.
Thanks & regards,

M$I believe that the invention of complex systems of communication amoung groups of humans had to be the greatest of all inventions.
Without the invention and development of complex systems of communication (languages) as a basis to work with, would mankind been able to invent anything else?
Perhaps, but I know of no civilization which can be linked to various inventions prior to this time which did not first and foremost possess a form of language which had to be invented regardless how rudimentary those first languages had to of been.

M$I usually take languages as milestones in mankind's history. The problem with this is that complex systems of communication wouldn't be an invention but many inventions, developed little by little with many people`s contribution. It wouldn't be mankind's greatest invention (in singular).
Because of soap, other sanitizing inventions, like hand sanitizer, autoclaves (which sterilize stainless steel tools), and things like Lysol products were invented. Sanitization is a massive industry, and it keeps most people of the world free from easily avoidable germs.

M$I know that you need language and the written word to have it, but I don't think that this prerequisite automatically makes it superior to its product.
Human's strive for knowledge is what has driven the race forward in technology.

M$Bob... you are really twisted. After looking at your video, I was reminded of a funny movie I saw last year called The invention of lying. If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend it! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1058017/

M$I think in past times you would have to look at literacy trade the invention of the wheel etc.
However if you look more recently, look no further than the invention of the internet. How amazing is being able to talk to people thousands of miles away, to be able to share information with billions of people and to be able to purchase pretty much anything you can think of and get it delivered a few days later. To have all the information you could possibly need available to anyone with an internet connection. As they say knowledge is power.
Yes you could argue that without the invention of computers / electricity / phone lines etc this would not be possible but I think pound for pound the wonder and vastness of the internet is the most amazing thing for me.
Thanks

M$Also, like the answer given by @shadowbear, the written word wouldn't be one invention but many, going from cuneiform scripts to hieroglyphs to phonetic alphabets and so on.
On the other hand, the written word seems to confuse people into thinking it is more valid. Just because something is written down doesn't mean you should believe it, just as you can't believe just anything you see on the web.
Countless things have been lost DESPITE the fact they were written. Think of the Library of Alexandria, where many manuscripts were lost for ever, or countless books that become dust without anyone ever reprinting them because publishing houses simply have nothing to earn.

Of course, without the written word and many other factors, like the development of language or the invention of paper and ink, Gutenberg's press would have never existed. However, this invention alone led to one of the major (if not the major) booms in many fields, not only knowledge. It reshaped the world.
Edit: "major", not "mayor". Sorry. I think in Spanish.
Gutenberg's press was what I was going to answer. In the documentary " The Day the Universe Changed " the importance of the press and printed books ( in languages other than Latin! ) was very well explained - spread knowledge to those who had no access beforehand.
It's a pretty good answer. However, without the written word actually preceding it by thousands of years, the invention of the printing press would've ultimately been a pointless invention.
