Macular Degeneration is a condition in which the center of the retina known as the macula is compromised due to a change in blood vessels surrounding the macula. This causes damage and causes changes in a person’s vision. There are two types of Macular Degeneration Dry (which is usually the early stage of the condition) and wet. Macular Degeneration is usually diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
At first there are no symptoms for Macular Degeneration but as the condition begins to progress, an individual may experience blurred vision especially when focusing with the center of the retina. Those with Macular Degeneration could find it hard to focus on objects and as the condition progress the vision could become worse.
There is no real treatment for the dry version of Macular Degeneration. A physician may recommend supplements such as zinc to help get the condition under control and keep it from getting worse.
With wet Macular Degeneration a doctor may recommend laser surgery and medications for treatment. But although laser surgery can be done for those with Macular Degeneration there is no known cure for the condition, all treatments are used as a way to get the condition under control.
