what is love?

Tip for best answer: M$1.02
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Love is a feeling.

Love is shown by your actions.

Love is a choice.

Desire is not love, but we may choose to feel love for that which we desire.

Sex is not love, but we may choose to have sex with someone we desire and love it.

Love tends to be shown by most people as all the nice things we can do and feel including patience, forgiveness, understanding, helping, caring.

But some people love things others do not like being mistreated, spanked, abused, criticized, rejected.

Contrary to popular belief, the opposite of love is apathy, not hate. Just as the opposite of hate is apathy not love.

What we experience as love is a personal and individual thing. If I do something more than once I could say I love it. If I didn't, I wouldn't do it (or allow it to happen) again - if I'm at all capable of preventing it that is.

So while I may stub my toe every now and then, I do not love doing it. It's an accident.

But I may choose to be in an unhealthy relationship (or go back to one) more than once even though I could (theoretically) find a healthier one elsewhere. So it would follow that I must love unhealthy relationships. But it's hard to find someone that will admit that so counseling is the best way to fix that anomaly in our hearts if we have that problem.

In conclusion? Love is complicated or love is easy. It depends on who you ask. :)

Oh, and I love your question.

Love is relative. For someone to feel "love", they draw on their experiences that have led them to believe what "love" is. For those who have never experience real love in their life, their conception of what love is would be very different than someone who has had healthy close relationships. Mental/emotional/spiritual state also affects one's personal conception of what love is. But I like the way Mother Teresa put it: "Love is when someone else's happiness means more to you than your own".

All of these words I associate with love in no particular order: happiness, insomnia, obsession, anxiety, butterflies in the stomach, honesty, sometimes intensely raw emotion: laughing (a lot of it), crying (not being afraid to), playfulness, silliness, unpredictability, confusion, palpitations, hunger, nausea, a feeling of comfort, public displays of affection, doing things you ordinarily wouldn't do, trying new things together, doing things to make each other happy, constantly calling & seeing each other...I could sit here all night and come up with terms...and I haven't even moved off the "Rated PG" stuff yet.

But most importantly: Both hoping it never ends.

The songs attached pretty much say everything I didn't if you listen to all three: Frank Sinatra's "I've Got the World on a String" and "You Make Me Want to Feel So Young" along with Kelly Clarkson's American Idol winner song: "A Moment Likre This."
