What is Google's Linux-based Chrome OS?

How can it make Chrome OS a major desktop contender by 2012? Is it a good operating system for office workers and not so savvy individuals? How does it differ to other open-source operating system projects?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Google's Chrome OS differs from other open source operating systems in that it is intended to be almost entirely web based.

So, if everything you do is web based, it might be a good operating system. Underneath it is essentially a Linux variant. But Linux tends to be difficult though stable.

Google actually provides a lot of stuff that might be enough for a business. But, any current business will have a lot of software that is not web based, which means its office workers would not do well with Chrome.

Kernel type Monolithic (Linux)
Default user interface Graphical interface based on the Google Chrome Browser

Official website google.com/chromeos/

Google Chrome OS is a forthcoming Linux operating system, based on Ubuntu and designed by Google to work exclusively with web applications. Google announced the operating system on July 7, 2009 and made it an open source project, called Chromium OS, that November.3456

Unlike Chromium OS, which can be compiled from the downloaded source code, Chrome OS will only ship on specific hardware from Google's manufacturing partners.7 The user interface takes a minimalist approach, resembling that of the Chrome web browser. Because Google Chrome OS is aimed at users who spend most of their computer time on the Internet, the only application on the device will be a browser incorporating a media player.3891011

The expected launch date for retail hardware featuring Chrome OS has slipped since Google first announced the operating system: from late 2010 to early 2011 to, by some reports, mid-2011
