What is good reading material for English majors?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When you’re studying English in college, one of the things you’ll need to be acclimated to is a wide variety of writing styles. In college, you’ll read many different genres from a variety of writers with diverse backgrounds. In order to prepare you for this, here are a few tips.

1. Take a step out of your comfort zone. If you’re not a fan of the classics try reading Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway. This will give you a good idea of a different style of writing and help you see imagery and characterization in a different light.

2. Try different genres. A good short story is The Man in the Black Suit by Stephen King. It’s an excellent story with intense imagery. Now mix that with Neighbors by Raymond Carver. You’ll notice a distinct difference in writing style and characterization. Do this with several short stories and/or novels to see the different styles you’ll be exposed to in your curriculum.
