What is George Steinbrenner's legacy? What will you remember most about Steinbrenner's life and times?

The baseball world was saddened by the death of New York Yankeess owner George Steinbrenner. His career and life are the stuff of legend, and he was truly an American icon.

What will you remember most about Steinbrenner's life and times? Is it the World Series titles they won during his tenure as owner? Was it the number of managers that he hired and fired? Was it his two separate suspensions from Major League Baseball? Or was it Larry David's portrayal of him on ''Seinfeld''? Whether you were a Yankees fan or not, a baseball fan or not, there is no denying that Steinbrenner carved a unique place in the history of sports in the United States.

I think Steinbrenner's ultimate legacy was his ardent drive to win even at the expense of turning a profit.

It's hard to say he was a genius franchise builder simply for a few reasons. He won a total of 7 World Series rings during his tenure, since his acquisition of the Yankees in 1973. The Yankees success in the mid-late 70s can largely be attributed to the structuring that had already occurred before his tenure. During the pivotal years of team growth in the mid-90s, Steinbrenner was actually banned from involvement with his team or the MLB. Gene Michael ran the organization those years, drafting Jeter, Posada, Mo and Pettitte, basically forming the overall structure of the team that would come to dominate baseball from the late-90s all the way up until now.

Don't get me wrong, you don't win seven rings by being a slub at the biz. But the fact is that Steinbrenner will almost certainly be remembered for the way he threw money around in order to dominate. Whether this was a credit to the game or not is debatable, but one thing's for sure, he was there to win.

@anjrued: I'm not sure I agree with your premise about Steinbrenner's early years success. When he took over the franchise in 1973 from CBS, they were an also-ran team for several years. If you look at the key players they acquired to help them win 3 AL pennants and 2 WS titles in late 70's; most of them were acquired AFTER Steinbrenner bought the team. The signings of Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson, and the trade acquisitions of Goose Gossage, Willie Randolph, Mickey Rivers, Ed Figueroa, Lou Pinella, and Chris Chambliss, all happened under Steinbrenner's watch.

I will remember meeting him in the elevator of the building he lived in in Fort Lee NJ called The Colony. I grew up in the Bronx with the Yankees and as a kid saw Mantle and Pepetone. I will remember him for his hands on style for the team and the Billy Martin years and fights. He is the guy who brought up the players salaries across the board and the game will remember him for that. I remember the talk of the guy who came a long way from shipping grain on the Great Lakes. He was a pain in the ass for many but in the end I think he was loved. I think even Reggie forgave him.
