Hello @fullow!

Foreshadowing is a literary technique that are used by many different authors to provide clues to the reader and enable them to predict what might occur in the later part of the story. It is a device wherein an author drops hints about the plot and what may come in the near future.
It gives hints also on certain development of the plot which come later in the story.

Foreshadowing may be broad and easily understood but it can also be complex use of symbols. These symbols are then connected to later development in the plot.
Some authors may deliberately use false hints called red herrings to send readers to the wrong direction. This is mostly done by mystery writers who want to bury clues.

Shakespeare often uses foreshadowing which are sometimes obvious. For instance, Romeo and Juliet both talk about dying but Shakespeare's use of it can be discrete and critics often argue about what certain symbols foreshadow.

Jane Austen also employs foreshadowing techniques in her work on Northanger Abbey. Charlotte Bronte also uses this to fantastic effect in Jane Eyre.

Foreshadowing, which is a method of not providing all the information straight away, is the presentation in a work or composition of literature of hints and clues that tip the reader off regarding what is to take place later in the work.

Simultaneously, numerous foreshadowing may be utilized to keep the reader speculate, mainly in how the obviously unconnected hints will entirely come together to make sense one day.

Accordingly, foreshadowing often serves two objectives. It develops suspense by raising questions that convinces the person who reads to continue and learn more about the incident that is being foreshadowed. At the same time, foreshadowing is also a way of making a narrative or sequence of events more authentic by moderately preparing the reader for events and happenings which are to follow.

The definition of foreshadowing according to Wikipedia.org:
Quote
Foreshadowing is a literary technique used by many different authors to provide clues for the reader to be able to predict what might occur later on in the story
End quote

It is used in literature to prepare the reader of what is to come. In a mystery, it might be seeing a gun in the drawer that warns of a future murder. In a romance story a flower shop may be a warning of an apology needing to be made in the future, or a big event coming up. In the Bible there are scriptures in the Old Testament that are foreshadows of the Christ that was to come in the New Testament. In that instance they are prophetic scriptures that tell about His coming.

In each instance, the information given helped the reader to see what was happening in the story, and in some instances gave the reader insight into what was to come.
