Hi @setimar! Fondant is a kind of icing which is used to decorate or sculpt pastries. The word is French and means "melted" and comes from the same root as the word "foundry" in English.

There are different types fondants:
1. Poured fondant is a confection cream that is used as filling or coating for cakes, pastries, and candies or sweets. It is sugar and water cooked to a soft-ball stage that is cooled slightly in its simplest form. Lemon is sometimes added to the mixture to add for taste.

2. Rolled fondant or fondant icing is not the same material as poured fondant is commonly used to decorate wedding cakes. Examples are gelatin and food-grade glycerine which help keep the sugar pliable and creates dough-like consistency. You can also make a powdered sugar and melted marshmallows. It is rolled out like a pie crust and use to cover the cake and gives the cake a smooth appearance.

Fondant comes in rolled or poured and is used to coat cakes. Poured fondant is made by supersaturating sucrose. The sucrose is dissolved at a high temperature and then left to cool. It is stirred vigourously when cooled and then turns into a nice, smooth consistency. It's easier to use for decorating than traditional icing, but is extremely sweet.

Rolled fondant is used to decorate wedding cakes. It is very pliable and has a consistency similar to dough. It is rolled out like a pie crust then used to cover the cakes. Sometimes it is made out of marshmallow and powdered sugar.

Fondant is used frequently is cake decorating contests and has been seen used on a variety of television shows on the Food Network.

Fondant is a sugar and water mixture that is cooked to reach a certain stage in which it can be very pliable and smooth. Many bakers use this mixture to cover cakes with as it is smooth and gives the cake a flawless finish, when it is applied correctly. Generally, most people take off the fondant layer before eating because it doesn't add anything to the flavor of the cake, and underneath the fondant is usually a layer of buttercream frosting which helps to adhere the fondant to the cake and gives the cake a better flavor.

Fondant has grown in popularity with television shows such as Food Network Cake Challenges and the Cake Boss, respectively. These shows demonstrate the various ways fondant is used for decorating purposes. However, in these shows the focus is not on the taste of the cake, rather on the aesthetics. If you are concerned about the taste of your cakes, try some fondant first and then make your decision.
