Fluoride is a compound that has fluorine in it. Fluorine is a natural element and is often present in water. There are some benefits to a small amount of fluoride in our systems. It can be beneficial for our dental health because it strengthens parts of our teeth that are weak by adding minerals that we need. A good amount of fluoride in water is 1 part per million. This balance is enough to help our teeth but not too much. If you are prone to tooth decay or cavities, you can also buy toothpaste that contains fluoride. Too much of the compound, however, can cause fluorosis. This basically presents itself as marks on your teeth. If you have it severe enough, there can big large brown spots on your teeth. Fluorosis can usually be treated pretty effectively though, at least in the appearance of your teeth.
