What is Facebook Places? Is it a way to locate people?

I have not checked out this new option yet. What is it used for? Is it a way to searchFacebook for people or information? Will this cause a problem for privacy issues? Will it enhance the Social Networking site Facebook? Will there be problems with this new addition to Facebook?

Tip for best answer: M$0.11
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi @lisak52, Facebook places is a new application by Facebook, which allows its users to tell other people where they are at a particular time through their mobile devices. It is a good feature because when you have it on your mobile device, you can give your relatives and friends real-time updates of your particular location and what you are doing at a given point in time. So if you are at a cinema, you might discover through facebook places, that some of your friends are also in the same cinema.

As at August 19, 2010, this feature is only available for users in the United States, but facebook plans to get it across to other countries very soon, precisely in the coming months.

Security is not 100%. Since your location announcements will be automatically published on your Facebook profile, everyone would know where you are and what you are doing, which isn’t quite safe. You’ll have to opt out of this feature or select the people who should or shouldn’t see your reports to avoid this publicity.

I don't think this is a good thing, think of stalkers! I would never add this feature, I think it's a very bad idea.
