What is essential reading for Buddhists?

Christians have the Bible, Muslims have the Koran, and Jews have The Torah. What is the text or scripture that Buddhists believe contain the main tenets of their religion? Is there more than one?

Buddhism has a vast number of scriptures, but no one text is accepted as authentic and authoritative by every Buddhists. There are difference in opinion. Tibetan Buddhism (sometimes called Lamaism) is the form of Mahayana Buddhism that developed in Tibet and the surrounding Himalayan region beginning in the 7th century CE. Tibetan Buddhism incorporates Madhyamika and Yogacara philosophy, Tantric. Two major branches of Buddhism are recognized:Theravada ("The School of the Elders") and Mahayana ("The Great Vehicle"). Historically, the roots of Buddhism lie in the religious thought of Ancient India during the second half of the first millennium BC.That was a period of social and religious turmoil, as there was significant discontent with the sacrifices and rituals of Vedic Brahmanism.

The teachings in Buddhist scriptures are directions for practice, or how to realize enlightenment for oneself. What's important is to understand and practice what the texts are teaching, Many scriptures are called "sutras" . Sutras are in many sizes. Some are book length, some are only a few lines. Not all scriptures are sutras.
• THERAVADA AND MAHAYANA CANONS.
• THERAVADA BUDDHIST SCRIPTURES.
• Mahayana Buddhist Scriptures.
Theravāda Buddhism: Language= Pāli, is the dominant form of Buddhism in Cambodia, Laos,Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Burma. The Dalit Buddhist movement in India also practices. East Asian forms of Mahayana Buddhism that use scriptures in Chinese are dominant in most of China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Vietnam as well as within Chinese and Japanese communities within Indochina. Tibetan Buddhism is found in Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, surrounding areas in India, China, Nepal, and the Russian Federation.

SCHOOL:
Theravada school, Mahayana school, Vajrayana school,
Some schools venerate certain texts as religious objects in themselves, while others take a more scholastic approach.

Unlike Christian, Jewish and Muslim religions, Buddhism has no single central text that is universally referred to by all traditions. However, some scholars have referred to the VINAYA PITAKA and the first four Nikayas of the SUTTA PITAKAAS the common core of all Buddhist traditions.

The main tenets of the Buddhist religion are : the Tripitaka or the Pali canon, Mahayana Sutras and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Tripitaka means "three baskets" and is referred to Great Indian scholar Rahul Sankrityayan - one who has mastered all the three Pitaka’s or Holy Canons of Buddhism.

The Mahayana Sutras (sutras are believed to be, either literally or metaphorically, the actual words of the Buddha) number over two thousand and were written between 200 BCE and 200 CE, the period in which Mahayana Buddhism developed.
The Tibetan Book of the Dead is a great work written by a Tibetan monk, and describes in detail the stages of death and the opportunities a person encounters at various stages: while dying, at the moment of death, during the 49-day interval between death and rebirth, and at rebirth.
