Emphysema is a disease of the lungs in which they lose elasticity and capacity to expel air, or exhale. This is because damage has occurred to the tiny airways in the lungs called bronchioles. So a person with emphysema will feel short of breath when they're active--more than normal--and, as the disease gets worse, even while they're sitting or resting. Emphysema is one of the diseases under the heading of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. The major cause of emphysema is smoking.
