Hi @saslar! E Ink is a proprietary type of electronic paper. It is manufactured by E Ink Corporation that is founded in 1997 based on research started at the MIT Media Lab.
It is available commercially and use in mobile devices like e-Readers and some mobile phone and watches.
The first mobile phone to use this E Ink technology is the Motorola F3. They integrate it into its display taking advantage of its very low power consumption.
The manufacturer of E Inks said that the principal components of electronic ink are millions of tiny microcapsule which measures about the diameter of a human one. Each microcapsule contains positively charged whit particles and negatively charged black particles that are suspended in a clear fluid.
The E Ink technology is not used on iPad. The eReader that uses this are Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo eReader, Plastic Logic, and Sony Reader.
