Durham is particularly well known because it is part of the area known as "The Triangle" in North Carolina. This area contains Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. This area houses both the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Duke University. One of the most popular events is actually in Chapel Hill on Halloween as the area closes down Franklin Street for a costume party in the road.
Durham itself hosts a minor league baseball team that is fairly well known. The spring and summer in Durham is filled with baseball events, all fairly significant. The stadium and the team are well known after having been highlighted in the movie "Bull Durham" starring Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Costner. This film brought national attention to the small farm team.
