What is DOTA and why is it so addicting?
I am not even sure if it is an acronym but I am very curious about this video game. A friend of mine is addictive to it. After office hours he spend most of his time playing it. And one of my students stopped going to school and when we tried to know his whereabouts, we learned that he is hooked in playing Dota. He lives in a dorm so his parents were not aware of this. We asked his parent to let him attend some counseling in school so that he will be able to control his urge to play the game. What exactly is dota and why is it that many are hooked on it?

DOTA (short for Defense of the Ancients) is an expansion set of the Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The actual expansion name is Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.
Why is it that many are hooked on it?
As stated in this article certain games are not just plain games but are more of a lifestyle for many. I have a copy of World Of War Craft III and i use to spend most of my time trying to master the game. And similar to Mahalo it became a way of life for me i had to give it up or probably it would be consuming nearly all of my time. I think most hardcore gamers take gaming to another level and allow it to control their lives. In essence it is like a disease a bad habit . It is a bad habit that some cannot over come or control.

Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a custom scenario for the real-time strategy video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, based on the "Aeon of Strife" map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is for each team to destroy the opponents' Ancients, heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters called "creeps". As in role-playing games, players level up their hero and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.2
The scenario was developed with the "World Editor" of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and was updated upon the release of the expansion, The Frozen Throne. There have been many variations of the original concept; the most popular is DotA Allstars, which has been maintained by several authors during development. The current developer is known by his pseudonym as "IceFrog", and has been developing the game since 2005.
