Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a combination of static stretching and isometric contraction exercises. It was originally used as part of physical therapy treatments to increase range of motion, but has since been adopted as a method of training by healthy athletes.

PNF uses static stretching where an external force, such as a person, a stretch band or a piece of exercise equipment adds resistance to a limb, stretching it beyond its point while tightening a muscle or muscle group. For example, an athlete tightens his leg muscles isometrically against the trainer’s hands for a few seconds. Then, the athlete relaxes those muscles while the trainer lengthens and stretches the leg muscles to a new range of motion.

Stretching is a great way to relax tight muscles after a workout, but PNF is used to supplement regular stretching to specifically increase range of motion and improve flexibility.
