Dementia is not a disease itself. There are many forms of dementia and most of them are mixed dementias, having more than one causative factor. There are two types of dementia, cortical and subcortical. The causes of dementia vary greatly depending upon the type, and include hardening of the arteries, hereditary conditions, alcoholism and severe traumatic injuries.
