What is best method to get rid of my beer belly? I just don't know where to start. (Yes my MD has cleared me to exercise.)

Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi Adam,

The key is a combination of eating right and exercising. Here's a great trick though: Drink 3 cups of green tea a day to boost your fat-burning potential (you'll get used to the taste after a while).

Diet: Especially if you plan on exercising, you'll need to stick to a balanced diet. There are many fad diets out there, so I'd recommend seeing a nutritionist to set you up with a diet tailor-made for you. Once you attain your goal weight, you can consider "breaking out" on weekends to allow yourself some time to eat what you like.

Exercise: If you do not have a regular exercise routine, you'll want to ease into it. Start with some gentle walking and increase the length and pace as your body feels more comfortable.

You'll need to include some resistance or weight training a little later on to replace the fat with muscle. The more muscle you have, the more fat you burn on a daily basis.

The trick with sticking to an exercise regime is to find an activity you really enjoy. Consider also exercising with a partner to distract you from the humdrum routine.

Here's a great exercise routine to get you started: http://www.fitnessandhealthscience.org/exercise.htm

All the best!

In addition to what the others have said, you may want to consider joining a gym or fitness center—someplace that has professional fitness counselors who can set you up on an exercise program. There are some things anonymous people on the Internet just aren't necessarily the best people to advise you about.

Agreed.

The best method is to hit the gym, cardio AND weights, and eat right.

The best way to do that is to find a good fitness counselor who will get you on the right program and make sure you don't injure yourself. Talk to a good nutritionist and get on a good eating program; stay away from crazy diets.

I asked the same question... for myself. Unfortunately, you can't do "spot" changes.

The FIRST place you'll see a change if you watch what you eat (and how much) and exercise is in your face. One of the LAST places you see change is your stomach. Sorry!

You might want to listen to my podcast. The second episode talks about this exact subject: http://www.kivaspirit.org/blog/?p=24 (or look for it on iTunes, Episode 2 of The Kiva Connection podcast)

First of course, you want to diet. According to the 75th anniversary "Joy of Cooking," cutting back 500 calories a day will let you shed 1 lb/week. The book advises avoiding diets that restrict certain foods (except possibly transfats), so you'll that stick to the eating plan long term.

Besides dieting, according to Dr. Phil, you should do strength training:

"Strength training, resistance training, lifting weights, is the most important mode of exercise that you can incorporate into your weight/fat loss program. Strength training builds and develops lean, precious, active, valuable fat-burning muscle! Muscle works like a brigade of fat-burning fireplaces throughout your body always on fire."
