According to the Mayo Clinic, coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to widen the passage available to blood in narrowed coronary arteries. The process entails insertion of a special balloon into the partially blocked arteries, and expanding it. A stent may be placed into the newly widened artery to prevent its re-narrowing.

- quote (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/coronary-angioplasty/MM00048 ) -
Percutaneous coronary intervention, also known as coronary angioplasty, opens narrowed coronary arteries.
A catheter inserted in an artery in the groin or arm is threaded to the affected artery. A second catheter is then inserted inside the first one.
When the catheter reaches the narrowed area, a balloon on its tip is inflated to reopen the artery.
While the catheters are in the artery, a stent may be placed to prevent re-narrowing after an artery is widened.

Angioplasty is a blockage of the arteries leading to the heart. Caused by smoking high fat diet or it could be genetic.

It depends--that's all correct for CORONARY angiolasty, but I've had 4 strokes and neurosurgery 7 times--each with the same procedure--performed by an interventional neuroradiologist. But the principle is the same--catheter in the groin, another inside it. They just don't turn at the heart--they go north. I go for a 3 1/2 year arteriogram--basically the same as surgery without the repairs being done--soon.. It's how they start interventional radiological surgery, to find out where everything is. While they're actually doing it in surgery, for the arteriogram or sometimes called angiogram, they only shoot in dye to get images like the one below, which you can find on the referenced wikipedia page.

Coronary angioplasty, or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is done to treat the closed blockages in the coronary arteries. This is done by inflating a small balloon which flattens the barrier. A small mesh tube or a stent is used to keep the blocked artery open. This procedure is adopted when a person experiences sever chest pain or has had a heart attack. Angioplasty is done in combination with coronary angiography, which aids the doctor in determining where and to what extent the artery is blocked. Refer to the website of Brigham and Women’s Hospital to know more through their cardiovascular center about follow up and procedures involved in this surgery.
