What is an aspect ratio?

What does the numbers 3:2 and 4:3 mean in terms of aspect ratio? What aspect ratio should I use? What effect will this have on the images?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of the width of the image to the height of the image. It is expressed as two numbers separated by a colon. It is a ratio so units of measure don’t matter. An aspect ratio of 16:9 inches is the same as 16:9 centimeters. Standard aspect ratios for media are based on the ancient Greek rule of thirds. If you think about it, most video and film formats are rectangles.

In still camera photography, the most common aspect ratios are 4:3, 3:2, and more recently 16:9. These ratios will appear to give a normal looking image within a rectangular format. In digital images there is a distinction between the Display Aspect Ratio (the image as displayed) and the Storage Aspect Ratio (the ratio of pixel dimensions). So the display ratio may be 4:3 but the pixel ratio is 1.33:1.
