What is all the fuss about ugly Christmas sweaters?

I am a proseller on Ebay and noticed sales taking a dive this year with the economy. To my surprise, this year ugly Christmas sweaters are still selling like hot cakes! I just checked and they for selling up to $200 each. Can anyone explain all the fuss about these ever so popular, ugly Christmas sweaters?

I guess it is time for us all to dig in our drawers, pull out the old ugly Christmas sweaters, and start making some money!

Maybe people buying these sweaters have money, I would hope so. I would hate to think they are struggling, like many of us, yet willing to pay a bundle for these hot commodities!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It looks like they've become popular due to a new holiday tradition of Ugly Sweater Parties. It actually sounds like fun. I would love to compete for the most obnoxious (that's what I do best!)

Here's an interesting article: http://tinyurl.com/3853xkc

Since both you and I don't have oodles of money to spend on this atrocious fashion statement... I'd recommend checking out Instuctables and seeing if they have any DIY ideas. I did find one link that says you can turn any sweater into an ugly Christmas sweater.

Maybe you and I can make money doing this next year!

Two words: Guilty Pleasure.

People who buy them are looking to be the center of attention, but with the twist of 'it's so bad, it's good'. It draws out the drama of gift giving, especially in families, and helps people relate to each others Christmas experiences.

I think it also falls in with Brendan Behan; who is quoted as saying: "There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary."

Cheers!

You make a very good point there rdm. I didn't really see it that way.

Now I guess I'll be taking advantage of those people next year by buying up all the ugly sweaters I can find at yard sales and second hand stores and sell them on eBay next October!

BTW, it was just suggested at work that we have an ugliest sweater party. I will not be participating. Bleh.

This is just so weird! What people think of to generate a trend! I can't believe people would actually spend 200$ on these items! These must be really bored rich people with nothing else better to do with their cash! Oh well, just going to the attic now, checking out if I have any, Then I will try to sell them too!! :)

they are fun to wear to office parties, parties with friends, and sitting next to a fireplace drinking apple cider.
