There are actually many different variations of agnosticism, much like Christianity. Some one who is agnostic does not necessarily believe or not believe in the existence of a higher power. It's more along the lines that it may or may not be true, but we as humans don't know yet, or aren't capable of finding out and knowing if there is a higher power. Also of note agnosticism is not a religion or theism. Unlike atheism which can be argues as a non-theism, therefore actually making it a religion.

An agnostic Atheist is someone who believes we can not know weather or not it is true, and lives their life with a general unbelief (not disbelief) in God.

An agnostic Christian (or agnostic theist) is someone who beleives that there is at least one God in existence, but it can't or hasn't yet been proven.

A militant agnostic is one who believes that no one ever really knows if there is a god and that both atheists and believers are deluding themselves and their audiences.

Agnosticism assumes a number of forms. In certain cases the agnostic refrains from denying God; instead he postulates the existence of a transcendent being which is incapable of revealing itself, and about which nothing can be said. In other cases, the agnostic makes no judgment about God's existence, declaring it impossible to prove, or even to affirm or deny.

Agnosticism can sometimes include a certain search for God, but it can equally express indifferentism, a flight from the ultimate question of existence, and a sluggish moral conscience. Agnosticism is all too often equivalent to practical atheism.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 2127 and 2128: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt1.shtml#2127

With love in Christ.

An agnostic is a person who doesn't subscribe to any one spiritual philosophy, but does acknowledge there is indeed a higher power than human conciousness. Atheists don't believe there is ANYthing and the universe is all happenstance.

When speaking about religion, an agnostic is a someone who says they don't know if there is a God or not. They might lean one way or the other, but they're not sure about it. An atheist is someone who says there is no God.

The word "agnostic" is also used in other situations to mean someone or something that is neutral, or doesn't take sides. So in computing we might talk about something being "language agnostic" meaning it will work with most any programming language.

Gnosis is knowledge. Agnostic is the state of not having knowledge. More commonly, agnostics believe that either we (as a whole) don't have knowledge about something, or that we can't have that knowledge. Many agnostics also claim to believe that God does not exist, but there are people who do believe in God, yet call themselves agnostic, because that belief is based in faith and not knowledge.

Agnostic is really an adjective in most cases. You can be an agnostic Buddist, or agnostic Christian. It is just the over all belief that you cannot prove of disprove a belief of another person when it comes to the afterlife...

It's commonly thought that Agnostics are Atheist. This is not really true. You could be an Agnostic Atheist for instance. Which means you do not believe in any god of afterlife and that you feel that nobody can prove you wrong.

I've never heard of anyone being called or calling themselves an agnostic Buddhist or an agnostic Christian.

It seem an unlikely expression as agnostic means being a "don't know" while being a Christian or a Buddhist implies having at least some degree of belief.

An agnostic waits for proof. An agnostic has very high standards for proof. (Like, an agnostic won't just "take your word for it.") An agnostic wants near tactile evidence. An agnostic is not impossible to convince, just extremely difficult. Gotta see it to believe it.
