Acid reflux or commonly called as GERD for Gastroesophageal reflux is a disease or condition in which the pyloric sphincter, or the muscle that is responsible of closing the partition between the esophagus and the stomach failed to close causing a reflux of acid from the stomach towards the esophagus. Since esophagus is a smooth muscle, it can be irritated by the acid from the stomach causing the feeling of heartburn.
This can be caused by lower esophageal sphincter relaxation, impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from the esophagus, or a hiatal hernia.
Treatment includes lifestyle modifications, medications and surgery.

Acid reflux is a chronic condition that irritates the esophagus. It is also known as Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Some people confuse it with heart burn. They are different from each other.

• When stomach acid travels back (refluxes) into your esophagus is known as acid reflux.
• When this acid comes in contact with the lining of your esophagus, you will feel a burning sensation.
• GERD is a more chronic condition than heartburn. You will have continuous symptoms (unlike heartburn that occurs two or more days a week).
