What is a shutter lag?
Does it happen when there is a slight delay from when you press the shutter to when the picture is actually taken? Is this a common problem to older digital cameras? How do I solve this problem if I’m experiencing it while taking fast-moving images?

Shutter lag or delay is different than shutter speed. It occurs in all cameras but is more pronounced in compact digital cameras. In an SLR or DSLR the lag is caused by the actual shutter speed since the light from the image is directly transferred to the sensor or film. In a compact digital camera the sensor is not charged until the shutter is clicked. The delay may vary from 1 to 2 seconds. In an SLR or DSLR the delay is usually under one quarter of a second.
The problem has been largely eliminated in new DSLR cameras with improved sensor technology. Keep in mind that auto-focus and auto exposure also contribute to the shutter lag. Use manual exposure and focus to minimize the impact. If you are using a compact digital camera consider upgrading to a DSLR if you plan to photograph fast moving images.
