What is a reasonable monthly food budget for two people who want to eat somewhat healthy. Have you done this?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

We usually spend about $600 on food costs per month. This includes restaurants, the morning coffee fix, and some seeds for the garden.
There is some ambiguity to eating "somewhat healthy." For some, that would mean strict vegan, for example. Without knowing what you describe as "healthy", I can only offer my own definition:
- No fake foods. No artifical whipped toppings or margarines, for instance. If it takes a factory or zero gravity to produce the substance, it isn't food.
- Fresher is better (that's why we garden and have chickens). It's about taste as much as nutrition.
- Avoid additives.
- avoid fast food in favor of restaurants who take pride in the qualtiy, taste and presentation of their meals. - eat and drink everything in moderation. A glass of wine in the evening, a cup of coffee in the morning, the occasional french fry feast are fine
Every year we seem to get better at this, which is measured by a lower food budget and higher quality food.

This highly depends on where you live, but I can give you numbers for the South and the West Coast. Presuming that you'll be cooking and eating the majority of your meals at home, a reasonable budget is around $400-500 per month. This keeps you from depending on cheap, starchy foods too much(which isn't healthy), but most of your protein sources will remain cheaper cuts of beef and chicken.
