According to “A Commonsense Guide to Grammar and Usage: Third Edition,” written by Mark Lester, a phrasal verb is created when you join a verb with either a preposition or an adverb.
Here are two examples:
We took apart the microwave.
‘Took apart’ is the phrasal verb. Took is the verb. Apart is the adverb. The idiom ‘took apart’ means to dismantle.
Our car broke down on the highway.
‘Broke down’ is the phrasal verb. Broke is the verb. Down is the adverb. The idiom ‘broke down’ means it fell apart or is no longer operable.
This web site, http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/phrasals.htm, has a list of common phrasal verbs. They explain what the idiom means and provide an example of how to use it in a sentence.
This site, http://www.ccas.ru/olenev/english/phverbs.html, also provides a list of phrasal verbs. This site is not as visually appealing as the first one. The information here is also much more in depth which may be more confusing if you only want a basic definition.
