Paan is betel leaf, which tastes fresh and peppery because of the betel oil in the leaf. The leaf comes from a vine called Piper betle. When you chew the leaf, you can taste pepsin, a digestive enzyme .
The leaf has all kinds of things put inside it to make a proper paan, like chuna or lime paste, katha or catechu and supari.
Supari----- commanly known as betel nut but botanical name being, areca nut.
Katha ----------is a reddish solution derived from the wood of the tree acacia catechu. It is an astringent and disinfectant. Katha enhances the redness in the mouth when chewing paan.

Condiments that make up the paan's taste :
---------------------------------------------------------
Elachi (cardamon), lavang (cloves) and saunf(fennel).

We do enjoy paan occasionally , that is only after a festive meal and not regularly as it is not healthy.
