What is a nice red wine that tastes good but is budget friendly?

Red Wine is good for the heart, so my doctor tells me. I know the health benefits but I am looking for a great tasting bottle that is not going to cost me an arm and a leg. With the right wine I know it’ll be easy to drink the glass a night that he recommends, it just has to be cost effective.

The best budget red wine in the USA is hands down Charles Shaw Wine or affectionately know as Two-Buck-Chuck. It is sold at Trader Joe's and literally costs $2 per bottle. It is as good as any $15 bottle of wine and better than many. Unfortunately, not all Trader Joe's stores carry wine (especially on the East Coast). But if you are on the West Coast, you should definitely try it. If you decant it, your guests will never know they're not drinking a great wine. You can also find it online. Don't forget to check out Mahalo's page on Charles Shaw Wine (see link below).

Hi @amybrowne! I found a list of cheap but good red wine. I haven't tasted all of them but these were really aged in oak with some hint of cherries. Just check them out!

These wines are:

1. Fast Bastard Shiraz from France
2.Big House Red from Central Coast of California
3. Hardy's Oomoo Shiraz from Australia
4. Bonny Doon, Cardinal Zin from Central Coast of California
5. Taurino Salice, Salentino from Italy
6.Primarius, Pinot Noir from Oregon
7. Castle Rock -Sonoma County Syrah of California
8. Ravenswood, Lodi Zinfandel of California. They have the oldest Zinfandel vines in California.
9. Oak Mountain, For Pete's Sake of Temecula California. This wine cost over $1 unless you are a club member.
10. Terrazas de los Andes Reserba, Malbec from Argentina
11. Red Truck from California
12. Ducks Pond, Cabernet or their Pinot Noir from Oregon
13. Bulls Blood from Hungary
14. Spellbound, Petite Syrah from Lodi California
15. Dry Creek fromSonoma, California

Hi Amy, I guess you would be looking to buy wine made in the U.S and there sure are some great ones! When I lived in England I used to buy U.S. wines regularly, I have fond memories of Blossom Hill, but now I have moved to Spain, it will be difficult for me to tell you names of individual wines, as we don't see them here.

However, I can tell you the types of grape that make for great tasting red wine, there is also a couple of websites below which may help.

For me, a good red has to have rich fruit flavors, blackberry, blackcurrant and with oaky overtones.

My favorites include, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Shiraz and Merlot.

I have found that if I choose a wine made from these grapes, it will be a usually be a good one. Just look for the price range that suits you and check out the label for production details. Enjoy!

My step daughter is a wine lover and she has always use Burgundy, This is a very dry, red wine and very cost effective and low in price. It is very budget friendly and you can buy a quite large bottle of it in most grocery stores and liquor stores. Burgundy is a acquired taste because it is not a sweet wine. Most people have told me that they do not like Burgundy wine because it is strong tasting and while it is not quite bitter, it is not appealing to the taste buds. I would suggest buying a smaller bottle of it to sample and see if you can tolerate is unique taste quality. There are other options to ordering this wine, such as online purchases. You may be able to find a local wine tasting event that you can attend to sample different red wines too.
