I am having a hard time in my algebra class. What exactly is a negative integer?

An integer is basically a whole number. A negative integer is a negative whole number. For example, -3, -4, -5, -6, and so on are all negative integers. A few rules when using negative integers are as follows:
1. When you multiply a negative integer with another negative integer you get a positive integer. For example, -3 times -4 equals 12.
2. When you multiply a negative integer with a positive interger you get a negative integer. For example, -3 times 4 equals -12.
3. The absolute value of a negative integer is a positive integer. For example, |-4| = 4.
4. When adding a negative integer to a positive integer, you will get a negative integer if the negative integer has an absolute value greater than the positive integer. For example -4 + 3 = -1, (absolute value of -4 is 4, which is greater than 3)
5. When subtracting a negative integer from another integer it turns into an addition problem. For example -6- (-3) = -6 +3, which is -3. (The double negative turns into a positive, which means addition)
6. When dividing two negative integers, you get a positive integer and when you divide a negative and a positive interger you get a negative integer. For example -6/3 = -2 and -6/-3 = 2.
7. When solving an inequality and you have to divide by a negative integer, the inequality sign flips. For example -3x< 6. To solve you divide by -3, so the answer is x> -2.
Hope this helps!
