A musical is simply a drama with music. The cast sings their dialogues rather than say them. I believe it is more challenging when the cast sings their lines. When it comes to a musical, the first show that comes into mind is the hit US television musical, “High School Musical.”

It is probably the most successful musical ever performed for television. The cast rehearsed their lines and dance steps very well before the actual shooting. This innovative strategy for a television drama is now imitated outside the US. Glee also followed the concept of High School Musical. It is good to see that the team behind these productions was able to get high-quality singers. The voices of the cast are their asset to make the show successful.

Musicals are a form of drama (theater). A musical is a play that has songs and often dancing as integral parts of the story. Musicals often involve a band or orchestra which plays the score written for the musical. Musicals usually have an overture, or piece made up of snippets of all the songs used in the musical, which is played for the audience before the musical begins.

From Wikipedia

-quote
Musical theatre is a form of theatre combining music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance.

The songs in musicals are usually more than just memorable tunes. They often give us clues to the thoughts, motivations and moods of the characters (usually the main character or characters) in the musical.

A musical can also have a postlude. Postludes, like overtures, include snippets of most or all of the songs used in the musical. A postlude may be played during the curtain call and/or as the audience is leaving the theater.
