What is a more interesting sports story for you...?(see inside)

A link to an event that ended three weeks ago...
A top seeded athlete that gets ousted by a teenager at a world class/grand slam event...
An athlete is arrested...
A link to a current/ongoing sports event...

Which do you think should be front page stories on Mahalo?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In the world of online sports information, I would think that for something to be given prominence it would either need to be (1) current and/or (2) a well-written, in-depth piece that is relevant to someone or something that is newsworthy. The internet has a clear advantage over other mediums in the “current” element because of the speed of delivery and 24/7 nature of it. However, with the speed that information moves today something that is newsworthy because it is first/timely loses its uniqueness very quickly. I feature-length piece on a current event/person (say the US Open or Andy Roddick) has the ability to be both relevant and has a longer life span as unique.

I think this is one of the things that makes people like Michael Lewis, Malcolm Gladwell and Bill Simmons so popular - they mix current with depth (in very different ways) extremely well.

Michael Lewis on Shane Battier: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/magazine/15Battier-t.html

Malcolm Gladwell on Underdogs:

Bill Simmons on US/Mexico Soccer:

Nice points here, and some great links to your suggested sports writers.

I would probably read about a teen knocking off an established superstar in some sport. That would appeal to the desire to pull for an underdog that many of us have.

My guess:

1. An athlete is arrested...

2. A top seeded athlete that gets ousted by a teenager at a world class/grand slam event..

3. A link to a current/ongoing sports event...

4. A link to an event that ended three weeks ago...

Your guesses @robbrown are incorrect...the top seeded athlete being ousted by an upstart is nowhere to be found on Mahalo sports news...and no front page link to the current grand slam event that this story sprung from...

The only front page news stories are either police log types or links to golf events that happened earlier this summer...oh well...maybe Mahalo isn't supposed to be a sports page, more of a celebrity gossip spot, and I guess that's ok.

Sorry Hillo, I think that I misunderstood. I was guessing what I would personally find interesting.

The "guess" comes into play because we don't know what the stories would be. I wouldn't find a story about Dennis Rodman being arrested for drug possession interesting, but I would find a story about a U.S. Olympian being arrested the same thing.

ok, gotcha. Some of us love the police log stuff...esp if its athletes or sports we care about. Me - not so much, but to each his/her own.

I'm just wondering about 'fair and balanced' sports reporting or rather headlines right here on Mahalo (we do know what the stories are - they are on the front page right now in fact)- we've had front page biking, golf etc. headlines all summer and some Wimbledon...lookin' for some more tennis as its happening - to be on the front page - of course along with the police log 'gossip' - oh I mean news...

Is the "buzz team" accepting new folks? @lon would know.

Sounds like you'd make a great addition to that team. Looks like some of those sports pages make some pretty good coin... might be worth the little bit of work if you're interested in a variety of sports.

Btw I just made that condition up. Just in case anyone thought otherwise. :)

In order of interest:

1) A top seeded athlete that gets ousted by a teenager at a world class/grand slam event...

Vey interesting. Who could you be thinking of here? :D

2) A link to a current/ongoing sports event...

Quite interesting. But frankly, if I'm interested in the sport, I knew that already. A link might tempt me to click to see "wassup", but I probably have places I look for that anyway.

3) A link to an event that ended three weeks ago...

Not too interesting, but I might prefer a link to a mega event from three weeks back to a link for a minor event happening now.

4) An athlete is arrested...
.
Unless it's an athlete I'm esp interested in, I don't care at all about this. "People sometimes commit crimes" is not news to me.

Of the choices I favor the news about another athlete being arrested. Athletes in some of the most popular sports are a disgrace and the public should be kept aware of that and hopefully the public will stop supporting the sports. Pro football and basketball come to mind in particular.

For an actual sports event to be interesting it should age a bit and prove its lasting interest. Sports events themselves should not be reported unless they are at least 100 years old.

I'm mostly interested in current sports events. Each sport event is a story in itself with each player involved as a character contributing to the entire plot, which is the progression of the event itself, the story ending with the team or individual athlete winning the event.

Having said that, a teenager being ousting a number one seed in an event such as tennis or ghe golf amatuer championship is a great story in and of itself, which goes hand in hand with a link to a current sports story.

I'm not generally interested in links to events that are three week old, unless it's an event that I haven't watched or heard about. Being a sports fan, most of the time I will have heard of the outcome of an event well before three weeks have passed.

The arrest of an athlete, although I will notice, is not something I read a whole lot about. As sad as it is, people get arrested everyday and an athlete is just another person. Just so happens athletes and other entertainers are in the public eye, so we know when they get arrested. We don't see the thousands and thousands of everyday average pepole who get arrested.

Agreed on the event that ended three weeks ago, even if it is golf...

Here's on of Mahalo's 'Latest News Stories' - would you agree that maybe it's time to put a current sports event out there? "Follow the 2009 PGA Championships, August 10-19th"
