Hi, @culverc!

As there are many different "types" of hernia, it is a bit difficult to determine which is which. Generally speaking it is a displacement or protrusion of an organ or part of it, i.e. it develops to be in a part of the body where it doesn't belong to due to tissue weakness or accident. Hernias can be very painful or they can be not painful at all.

As this can develop into a very serious condition, please see a medical professional about a proper diagnosis as this is the most important issue first. Then you will be advised whether it is sufficient to wear a support or if operation is needed.

For a very complete and detailed explanation on the subject "hernia" please click on the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hernia

There is also a very complete book about the subject on Amazon, please click on: http://www.amazon.com/Hernia-Infections-Pathophysiology-Diagnosis-Prevention/dp/0824746120
You can even "look inside" the book a bit, just click on the book cover!

I hope this helps!

In Latin, hernia means “a rupture.” A hernia occurs when either an organ or the fascia of an organ protrudes through the wall of the cavity that it is normally contained in. The three parts of a hernia are the orifice, the hernia sac, and the hernia’s contents.

In humans, herniae most often develop in the abdomen. They happen when there is a weakness in the abdominal wall that develops into a localized hole, and the abdominal organs, or the adipose tissue, then protrude through the hole covered with peritoneum. Herniae can also involve the spinal discs and cause sciatica, which involves pain in the lower back that can spread down one or both legs.

Herniae typically are painful, but they don’t have to be; it is possible for a person to have a hernia and not feel any pain at all. Generally, however, hernia patients feel significant discomfort and a small lump in the infected area.

Hi @culverc, hernia is a condition where there is a protrusion of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains its.
A "hiatal hernia" is a condition where the stomach protrudes into the mediastinum through the opening of the esophagus in the diaphragm.

The most common hernia occurs in the abdomen when there is a weakness in the abdominal wall which creates a localized hole through which the fat tissue or abdominal organs may protrude.
Causes of hernia differs depending on each person.
Improper lifting of heavy weight, hard coughing bouts, sharp blows to the belly or abdomen, wearing of tight clothes and incorrect posture can contribute to it.
In addition, there are certain condition that increase pressure to the abdominal cavity can also cause hernia or worsen those that are already existing.

Weakened muscles because of poor nutrition, smoking and overexertion are most likely cause hernia.
Hernias are generally treated through surgical repair. This must be done to prevent complications like organ dysfunction, gangrene and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death.
