M$They have a HUGE photo selection and most of the images are reasonably priced. They have vectorized images, as well as multiple sizes for JPEG's. The larger the size, the more the cash.
They also have a huge list of icons, backgrounds, etc...
Good luck!

istockphoto was my first thought too. maybe youanden intended to say he has another idea that he thinks is better instead of telling you you're wrong and accusing you of googling.
... and you have to pay.
Personally, as a web designer, iStockPhoto offers large images, large backgrounds, that sort of thing. I guess it is okay to use someone elses repeating 100x100 gif, but if you are going to use a large image, why use someone else's, for that matter. Who would actually do that? Plus the optimization, the server requirements for a descent latency... iStockPhoto isn't really web-centered... and that's my point. It's not very relevant.
youanden - I hear you on the graphic sizes. Of course you wouldn't use print sized graphics on a website, but iStock does offer much more than just stock, print photo's. They have great icon sets, vectorized images that are very small in file size, but scale up wonderfully.
Sure you have to pay, but it's really not much at all. Anywhere from $1 to $20 per image is a small price to pay for great quality images that fit your needs. The icon sets have many icons on each page, and are not charged independently.

For your information, iStock does have icon sets and backgrounds in addition to other photo's. I've used them quite extensively to get high res, vectorized icon sets.
I didn't "google" the answer - I shared my experience.
Negative comments are not needed...try and stay positive fella.
