I'll bet that your two dogs are not only eating you out of house and home, they're probably pooping you out of yard space, too.

Little-known fact: dogs can't properly digest soy. This leaves their stools huge, soggy, smelly, and...persistent. Instead of quickly drying and then crumbling, they just sit there and stink for days. The dog probably does, too, because soy gives them gas. Soy can also affect their skin and other systems.

Good dog foods don't contain soy. I used to breed show dogs, and we used either Purina O.N.E. (which uses rice for the grain) or Nutromax. If we had a dog that had skin problems then we used Nutro's Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. There are many other more expensive brands with a similar recipe, but these were less expensive. Joy's Diamond dog food also used to be pretty good.

I know you're saying "but Wal-Mart's is so cheap!" Here's the thing: when you feed these better brands, you don't have to feed them so much. It's like the difference between you eating nothing but plain, untopped bread, or eating a regular meal. In order to feel full with the bread, you'd have to eat half the loaf, and a couple of hours later you'd need to polish it off, and then you'd need another half loaf a couple of hours after that. Whereas if you ate, say, a serving of chicken with a salad and vegetables, you'd feel full for quite a long time.

Essentially, the dog foods that boost their proteins by using a lot of soy are severely overstating how much protein there is in it, because the dog can't digest it. So a dog food that looks like it might have 15% protein actually has much less than that. It's like you eating a bowl full of bran, and does exactly the same thing for the dog.

Good Dog magazine has been doing dog food analysis and reviews for over 20 years. They have lots of great information about dog nutrition and what to look for. You might be able to find it at a pet supply store, or at the website below.

Dang, I was going to answer but Tracebooks beat me to it.

What she says is absolutely correct. The cheaper the dog food, the more "filler" it contains. Filler goes right through your dog.

Read the contents on cheap dog food and you will find things like "peanut hulls" and "meat by-product" (which can legally be any kind of meat except human).

I used to work for a pet store and learned all about this and I've also written some articles on dog food.

for real good quality dog food, buy meat and the other ingredients in bulk and make it yourself.

My vet recommended feeding Iams to both my dog and cat. It is reasonably priced for a good quality food.

I fed my cats a different food for years that I thought was good brand. Despite carefully measured portions, one became obese and developed health problems. The vet recommended switching him to an Iams produced specialty food that clears up his issues in no time.

Also, when you feed a good food to your dog, they will eat less because the food fills them up faster. My pets were eating large amounts of a "cheap" food, and when they were switched to a more expensive, better quality food, they ate about a 1/4 of the amount they did before.

How much are you feeding your dogs? You might be overfeeding them. We were overfeeding or yellow lab (age 7) and she got rather portly. Our vet suggested we mix 3/4 what we normally fed her with some carrots, green beans or even popped kernels of popcorn.

The main reason for the switch was for puppy weight loss, but the added bonus is that the food lasts much longer. And Sunny (that is her name) absolutely loves the green beans. She treats them like a prized treat.

So you could save money that way.

I'd suggest talking to your vet before you do anything like this, to see how much you should really be feeding your dog and if he or she agrees that supplementation is a good idea. I have two vet friends who have disagreed that popcorn was a good idea, but they did agree that green beans and carrots were fine.

My parents have bought Wal-Mart's 'Ol Roy' food for their past two dogs, and have always found it to be inexpensive and the dogs have had no problem chowing down on it. Their first dog lived to be 16, and the second is 7 right now, and as healthy as ever. Your best value with any dog food also is to get the REALLY big bags of it and just keep it stored somewhere.

Sometimes a more expensive per ounce dog food can still be cheaper because the serving size is less as it is more nutritionally/calorically dense. I'm a big fan of Candidae All Life Stages dog food. It has a good protein mix and uses quality ingredients. You might end up paying more in the long run for cheaper bags of food with lots of filler that your dogs eat more of. If you free-feed your dogs the best thing to do is to get them on feeding times, it seems inconvenient at the start but you get used to it pretty quick. Also getting the biggest bag is usually a good idea, you can get an inexpensive plastic bin at Wal-Mart or Meijer or something to keep it in. Also consider a chain pet store's Rewards program, a lot of them have a "buy 10 bags get 1 free" of various brands of dog foods. PetCo's P.A.L.S. program is free and is just a rewards card like at the grocery store, whereas PetSmarts PetPerks is more like a credit card.

Kirkland is the best budget dog food that I've seen. It's sold at Costco. I believe that a 40 lb bag costs between $18-24. Much cheaper than "premium" dog food that have a lot of grain and fillers. Here are the ingredients for one of Kirkland's products:
Kirkland Signature Range Chicken Full Ingredients List:

Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearl barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and vitamin E), egg product, beet pulp, potatoes, fish meal, flaxseed, natural flavor, brewers dried yeast, millet, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, carrots, peas, kelp, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, chondroitin sulfate, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

If you are having trouble affording food or supplies for your dog, check with your local humane society or shelter. They may have a "food pantry" that can help.

Some of the Kirkland brand dog foods at Costco are actually manufactured by Diamond. I get the 40 lb. bag of Kirkland Lamb and Rice for the same price as a 20 lb. bag of Diamond Lamb and Rice.

Hello, I know you already have alot of very long answers to read through so I'll keep mine short and simple. Go to Petco and get Natural Balance it is very good and very inexpensive it has no corn (which can kill dogs) or any of the stuff in Wal Mart's 'Ol Roy which is proven to cause cancer and illegal in britan. Believe me I have had dogs my whole life, they just need simple food that wont hurt them.

Max by Nutro, large breed formula, is an excellent choice for a budget food for your dogs. The food is well priced and has much better ingredients than you "grocery store" foods do. There aren't any by-products or fillers used, so your dogs get more nutrition. Several shoice ingredients help the skin and coat as well. Those size dogs should be eating about 4 true cups a day. You should always measure out you food precisely to control weight and costs. the better the food the less hungry they will be! Nutro Max is available at most pet retail stores.

FYI: I was feeding my Black Lab Nutro Max and noticed that at least once a week she was throwing up, but felt fine. Then I read where as of a couple of weeks ago, Nutro has been under a hidden investigation by the FDA. The food has been causeing vomiting even death in some dogs. I have now switched dog food and am going with IAMs.

See if you can find someone in your family or workplace who has a membership with Sam's Club or Costco or some other wholesale type store. Sam's at least lets one or more people accompany the cardholder as guests and make purchases. You could get a forklift worth of dog food if you wanted at relatively cheap prices.

Actually, the idea that Sam's Club and Costco are always cheaper is a common misconception. While they are a good buy on some things, they can be higher on others. I learned that writing this article:
