What is a good program to convert a .mod video file to an mpeg 4 format or other more widely uses format

I have a jvc camcorder and it only used .mod file format. It is based on an mpg4 format. I want to compress some of my videos to make them smaller so i can put them on my ipod or send them to family members. I need a cheap or free program if it is possible.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

For Macs, you'll love VisualHub and ffmpegX- a program I've used specifically with the .mod format you're speaking about. Quite the hassle! (Both can be found through Google).

On a PC, there are quite a few options. A good comprehensive list is at http://convertmodfiles.com/ though CyberLink PowerDirector is a good option that I believe is included with the camera.

My blog's at davemoyer.org, my Twitter's @davemoyer. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any other questions!

For the Mac Visual hub is the best program hands down. Second to that is Handbrake. Together they can convert anything.

You can rename .mod files to .mpg and they will play. I have a JVC Everio and I also use iMovie on my mac. It imports them just fine and you can convert them that way to if you like.
source(s):
Found on the Internet when I first got my Everio camcorder.

I don't know your computer experience so I am adding these steps just in case. If you don't have the file format showing and you just add the .mpg extension.... All it really does is change your file name from movie.mod to movie.mpg.mod. No change to other players. Once you name it to .mpg you should be able to play it in Windows Media Player.

1. Open the explorer window where your files exist
2. Select the Tools >> Folder Options menu item
3. Click the View Tab
4. Uncheck the option to “Hide extensions for known file types”
5. Click “apply to All Folders if you always want to see the file extensions for every file no matter what folder you are in
6. Click ok to accept all changes and close the dialog window
7. You should now see all the file extensions of the files in the current folder
8. Right click on a filename you wish to change and select Rename
9. Rename the file extension to anything you’d like.

I prefer Super (on the PC) for any file conversion I need to do. It's super small and lightweight and have yet to find a format it can't tackle.

Yah, I know their site is a bit hard to navigate, but I assure you it works. Here's the direct download link if you don't want to navigate the site yourself:
