What is a good plant to buy for a betta fish tank?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm learning myself so referring you to some sources. My beta starter kit came with artificial plants.

Source 1 suggests floating Water Sprite, Hornwort, and Elodea. If breeding, then use Tiger Lotus (like a lily pad).

Source 2 suggests Chinese evergreen, philodendrons, or peace water lilies.

What you choose depends on size of tank, number (and type) of fish, lighting sources, light requirements for plants and light trade off (too much sun and you get algae - not enough sun and plants won't grow). The articles suggest different plants for different conditions.

There use to be a gimmick - stores use to tell people to get a peace lily or something and the fish would eat off the roots - this was a SCAM!
These fish are carnivores and should not eat plants!
Some plants take up too much space on the surface of the water - actually killing the fish because Bettas (2-t's in Betta) need to come to the surface to get air - they have a special organ called an Labyrnith.
Get a plastic one for the bottom or do not get a plant at all.
The link below shows neat Betta trivia.

If You want live plants and are looking for the natural habitat You must consider java fern (Microsorum pteropus) and/ or java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri).

If You're not interested in the right biotope( original habitat) any live plant is useful, I personally have a small tank with three kinds of plants : Glossostigma elatinoides, Bacopa monnieri and Rotala rotundifolia with a very happy betta.

The artificial plants are easier, but You must not use the plastic ones, because your fish could get injuried or the fins ripped. Use the silk made plants.

The important thing is to give Your fish  some place to hide and to make its bubble nest this will show You how happy your fish is.
