Gems and gemstones are best photographed with macro lenses no matter what type of camera you are shooting with. The Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Len works really well for shots of small objects, up close. This is also a nice sized lens as it is not as large as some other lenses so it is easy to transport.
In order to take the best photos possible you should also consider picking up the Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite as it gives the subject a great glow without washing it out like a flash would do. This can be particularly important when shooting jewelry and gems as it will fill them with light showcasing the beauty of the objects. Also make sure the background absorbs light as opposed to reflecting light as you want the gem to do all of the reflecting in order to make the gems glow.
