What is a good hostess gift besides the standard bottle of wine?

Tip for best answer: M$2.01
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Here are five plus great substitutions for the standard bottle of wine:

1. A set of candles or a candle holder with candles. There are so many types available and almost every likes candles.

2. If you know your hostess, here are some suggestions that may work:
- chocolates if they like them and aren't on a diet
- a cookbook if they like to cook
- if they like to garden and have houseplants, bring something that they may like

3. Consider home made gifts like
- special recipes that you may have for bread, sauces, spiced nuts
- homemade bath products like bath salts

4. Instead of wine, bring a bottle of a specialty liqueur like creme de menthe or Bailey's Irish Creme.

5. Bring a gourmet coffee, tea or food product like imported cheeses.

Several other ideas can be found in the sources given below.

The best hostess gift is something that can be used that night, which is why a bottle of wine is such a great token. However, if you don't want to do the standard, then a nice centerpiece like a simple bouquet of flowers, or a plant would be a great substitute. Candles are always a great gift as well, but make sure if you are having dinner that you do not bring your guest scented candles as that is not a good combination. You want to stray away from something too personal for a hostess gift because others will see your hostess opening it, so in as much as you don't want to be generic, try to have your gift fit the occasion.

If you happen to know what kind of food will be served, something to accompany the meal is a superb addition. For example, if your hostess is making a Mexican dinner, a nice jar of gourmet salsa is a thoughtful gift. Or for a Greek dinner, a package of Baklava would be great.

Bring Tea! The days of sipping Tea and coffee after Dinner are drifting away. We have a tradition with my circle of friends that whoever cooks the other people bring a nice decaf herbal tea. Swing by a nice healthfood store and take a look at all the herbal options. Everyone loves sitting around drinking a cup of tea and chatting with friends. Even better if you can learn a little something about the type of tea. Some come in fancy silk bags now.

I like to fill a pretty gift bag with handsoap, hand lotion, and a pretty kitchen towel set. These are items that everyone uses and appreciates. Bath and Body Works has some fabulous kitchen handsoaps (Kitchen spice is one of my fav) and matching hand lotions. Kohl's offers a great selection of kitchen linen. You can also add a matching potholder to the gift bag.
