What is a good hacktastic smartphone?
Okay, I'm no master hacker, but I'm comfortable with the basics. I can solder, program an Arduino, or throw together my own software when I can't find a program for the task at hand. Basically, I'm a mac user: I enjoy the super-polished interface, but I appreciate that I can dig into the command line if I need more control.
So I recently got a big promotion, and I'm thinking about getting a fancy-pants phone now that I can afford it. What's a good phone that will allow me both a good experience and real control over the device?
The Freerunner looks awesome, but I'm deterred by the small user base and lack of 3G.
Android looks cool, but it seems like it's still somewhat locked down on most devices. I mean, why should I have to hack around to get root access on a device I own
iPhones are sexy and all, but I'm pretty philosophically opposed to the closed app-store ecosystem.
What should I do?

As far as I can tell, the android platform is pretty easy to hack. And, yo don't have to "hack" an android system so much as just install a "superior" version of the software. It's really easy these days. My G1 is running android 2.1 (just don't tell my carrier :)) the G1 only oficcially supports up to 1.5
