What is a "denial of service attack"?

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A denial of service (DoS) attack can be thought of like a "flood".

In a DoS attack, a computer (usually a web server) is flooded with so many connections that it cannot respond to legitimate requests.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are similar, but rather than coming from a single location, requests are sent out from a variety of different locations. This makes the attack harder to stop.

Commonly, "botnets" are formed from millions of unsuspecting, virus infected personal computers and servers. Once activated, the combined power of the botnet is substantial and if properly activated can cause network administrators a little bit of trouble.

Sometimes, a website becomes so popular that without meaning to be an attack it floods a website with traffic causing it to stop working. This is commonly refereed to as the "Slashdot effect" or the "Digg effect".

The solution to DoS and DDoS attacks is redundancy, traffic shaping, and connection identification and routing.

A denial of service attack, A.K.A. DDoS, is when a group of computers are programmed usually by a hacker to connect to a server and flood the bandwidth and processing that the server is using to connect to the internet. This results in usually bringing the server to it's knees and not allowing any legitimate users to access the server.

DOS is a deliberate attack made on a service to overload it and render it useless to the legitimate users..

It can be disturbed also ..Where 'n' number of computers work synchronously and attack a particular service..Hacker can use any one system to launch a attack if backdoors exists then victim computer is said to be a "zombie".

There many legal tools available to do DOS for "penetration testing" of a site..

Example of one such attack:
