What is a 503 Server Error and why do I keep getting it every few pages on Mahalo Answers?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There was a hardware update late last night, there is a good chance the issues you are experiencing are the results of the update as the systems get back in sync.

Mahalo switched servers this morning. It was down for a couple hours. Everything is up and running great now!

"Your Web server is currently unable to handle the HTTP request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. Some servers in this state may also simply refuse the socket connection, in which case a different error may be generated because the socket creation timed out."

I haven't yet gotten this error in browsing Mahalo Answers, but maybe something specific to your connection or the route used by your computer to get to Mahalo's web servers is causing this error intermittently.

I've been getting this error a few times. I doubt its a routing issue, more likely a server loading issue.

I haven't seen it at all from my end, today at least. A few days ago I recall seeing it one afternoon but not since. Maybe a particular server (assuming they're using load balancing with a cluster of servers) is flaky and getting swamped occasionally or something?

A 503 means service unavailable. Most likely there are too many people on Mahalo Answers for the servers to cope.

I just got it myself. I think it sometimes happens if someone edits their question while you're trying to respond to the post. At least that's been it part of the time. Just a few minutes ago I was trying to respond to a post, and my computer first went to the 503 page, and then when I tried again, just hung. But when I backed out to the main answers page, and went into that question again, my answer had posted.
