The 5X5 theory came from Bill Starr. The 5X5 is a strength routine. The thoughts behind it are that 5 sets 5 reps, with a max weight are one of the best target areas for size/strength increases; doing only compound movement exercises - bench press, bent rowing, squats, deadlifts, pullups, standing military press, etc. If you can do more sets and/or more reps, you should increase the weight so that you basically can only do 5X5. See Madcow's link for the 5X5.

M$the other meaning could be multiplication. five multiplied by five. or Five squared (but five squared would be written as the number five with the number two suspended to the right hand side of it.)
it is also a workout program, where one does five sets of five reps of five different exercises, a type of rubik's cube puzzler, a computer generated game similar to othello, and a paper and pencil game that can be played on the spot. it refers to a way of reporting on the status of a radio signal, and a song by an R&B artist named Ashley Ballard.
undoubtedly i have missed many more applications of the 5x5, but these are a few.
