As far as picking an instrument that you can play in high school band, I would suggest starting with the clarinet. You can always change over to a saxophone later if you like, as they are played the exact same way - same fingerings and notes. So, if you play the clarinet, you can automatically play the saxophone. You can also switch over to the bass clarinet or alto clarinet if you know how to play the clarinet. Other cool instruments include the flute, which is also quite popular. A lot of people also enjoy trombone or percussion instruments.

You may want to take some time listening to various instrumentals so that you can learn what each instrument sounds like and then make your choice based on that. Some people prefer the sound of a saxophone or the light, airy sounds of a flute. A flute or clarinet is more affordable, if you need to buy your own instrument or if you would like to have a personal instrument. Otherwise, schools usually provide the instruments for students to play, although the amount and selection will be limited.

Hi @mblamar!

High school is really fun and is more fun if you are joining in clubs, groups, dance troupe and the high school band. It gives you the sense of belonging and pride. And so you want to join your high school band but don't know what instrument to play. I think it's this simple. Play the one that you like best. I think you know what I mean. By playing the instrument that you love, you will be able to give your best and express your best self with your instrument. Or if you don't know how to play any instrument yet then attending band class can surely help. And I guess your co-band members are that willing too to support and help you to learn so give it a try.

Good luck!

Band is a wonderful way to really learn a musical instrument and at the same time gain team work experience. Selecting an instrument can be simple or difficult depending upon how you think about it. For example, you can select the clarinet for band because it is lightweight and less expensive, usually around $300 - $400, than other band instruments like the drum or cymbals. Plus when you are finished with the band class, you can still play the clarinet in jazz ensembles later down if you choose to keep playing or if you need some extra money and wish to work on the side in a jazz club. If you want to be more daring you can also try the trumpet or saxophone, both of which can run to around $1,000. The two instruments can also be used after band. Drums or cymbals will be a harder to use again after you learn the skill.
