What ingredients are typically used in Thai food?

Do most grocery stores sell typical Thai food ingredients? Can I buy traditional Thai food ingredients online?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Here's a good list:

Of course everything depends on the specific thai food you want to cook. You can also use something else or leave an ingredient out; Nobody's going to judge.
Try Googling Thai or oriental food shops in your district.

I think you need to go to an Asian food market (unless you live in Hawai'i) to find the traditional ingredients such as Kafir lime leaves, chiles, tofu, fresh lemon grass, fish sauce, fresh basil etc

If you can get these ingredients - the book I learned to cook on was called "Keo's Thai Cuisine" It is still in print and easy enough to find at Borders Books or on-line. It was written by a Thai restaurant owner in Hawai;i. The recipes are delicious and easy to make, the instructions are clear and there is a photograph of each ingredient so you know what to buy. The only challenge, is - if you don't live in Hawai'i or near an Asian grocery store - getting some of the ingredients. I still make Thai food on occasion, but since moving to California I mostly have to leave out what I can't find and it doesn't taste authentic
