In 1611, Donne was about to leave his pregnant wife in London to attend business in France. It is for her that the poem is written, to forestall her mourning, and perhaps his own, at their separation. He suggests that their love is far above the common love of other couples. If they were to mourn in the same way as others, it would cheapen their spiritual love which was superior to the limited physical love of the common people. It is their spiritual and mental connection that remains, no matter if they are in physical proximity to one another. Their love is like a compass (the kind used to draw circles) with his wife being the pointed end that remains in the center, and he being the end that circles about. In the end, he promises to return to London.
