What, in your opinion, makes a good character in a book, film, TV show, etc.?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A level of depth to the character. Kind of like a best friend, complicated and inspirational. Also a strict moral code that will cause inner conflict and force unwanted decisions in order to adhere to them. Not like these superficial characters so many teens flock to, ie twilight, but more like characters from 'Huckleberry Finn', 'Catcher in the Rye' and 'Othello'.

I love a good character that has more than one layer. A character that can surprise you with wit or humor when it is unexpected.

I think a good character should have a little mystery, a little honesty, a little naughty and a good sense of humor. The person doesn't have to a glamorous woman or the best looking man.

When reading a book or watching a TV show, we need the characters to be "believable". It's okay for them to be simple, silly, eccentric, etc. but there must be some trace of realism. We need to have a way to identify with their human side. Yes, this leaves the field WIDE open because we are all unique in so many ways.

Perfect example of strong character development is the long running tv sitcom "Friends". These characters all had traits we could identify with. They brought to the screen all the human emotions (laughter, sadness, anger, frustration. It was easy to fit in with the gang portrayed on "Friends".

A good character is one we can relate to. A character that gets us so involved in their life, we start feeling their pain, happiness, sadness etc right along with them. (When good things happen to them, we feel happy for them_ Sometimes a good character is one that takes us away from reality. Like Harry Potter or the Twilight Saga. Characters you can escape with, that take you to another world for the duration of the movie or book.
