Any list of "important" events is going to be pretty subjective, so I will just stick with one:
On October 2 2002 The Congress of the United States passes a joint resolution, which authorizes the President to use the United States Armed Forces as he deems necessary and appropriate, against Iraq.
I think this had (and has) far reaching and important consequences for the following years and probably decades.
