Some people use whole cloves by making slits crosswise on the surface and inserting the cloves into where the slits intersect. My father used 7-UP to baste the ham with pineapple slices resting on top.
I like to make a sweet glaze with brown sugar, and a little water and cook the ham in that. In fact if you slice the ham first and rotate the slices on the bottom that are siting in the glaze and let them cook at a low heat for a couple hours, they come out so juicy, tender, and sweet that you'll never make it any other way again.
