What horror movies are said to be based on true stories?

I know that when 'The Haunting in Connecticut' came out, I did a lot of research on it because it was said to be based on real events. I found that the family had been known for making things up for money. I also found out that their son had been on medications due to an illness, and he had admitted to someone that the things he seen stopped once he stopped taking the medications.

What horror movies are based on true stores? Do you believe it?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A good number of horror movies claim to be based on actual events or loosely based on a true story or person. For example, it has been said that Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based on the real-life serial killer Ed Gein.

Honestly, nowadays, anytime I hear about a horror movie based on actual events, I don't give it much credit. A lot of them are more less interpretation. Another example is the film The Fourth Kind, which was based on a series of disappearances in an Alaskan town, but the film played on the idea that people were abducted by aliens. Despite being what I thought was a very creepy movie, it isn't completely true.

Some movies that are said to be based on actual events are:
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
An American Haunting
The Mothman Prophecies
The Strangers
The Stepfather
The Amityville Horror
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
