What happens when atmospheric pressure is greater than intrapleural pressure?

Atmospheric pressure actually IS usually greater than intrapleural pressure. Normal atmospheric pressure is 760 mm Hg, while normal intrapleural pressure is just under this, averaging 756 mm Hg at rest.

Intrapleural pressure does not equilibriate with atmospheric pressure because there is no direct communication between the pleural cavity and either the atmosphere or lungs.
